This is not the time to sit back

Let's get the bad news out of the way. Credit is going to get harder over the next few years. When a housing bubble bursts and banks tremble, the first thing that happens is money gets tight. Go back even a few months and the banks might have been encouraging you to borrow some more. Now they are writing you letters to think about paying some back. So, if what was easy is now going to be hard, you need to defend your interests. The first step is to get a free credit check. Most everyone that has an interest in you takes a look at your credit history. It can be your bank or credit card company, your insurance providers, your mortgagee or landlord. That means it better be correct in every last detail. Since all these people have their own formulas for calculating a credit score for you, the raw data must be right to give you the best possible score.

There are three credit bureaus that act as clearinghouses and set out to collect all the consumer credit information about you. They are Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. In the good old days, they used to charge for a copy of your credit report. Following the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA), you have the right to get one free report per year from each of the three companies. More importantly, you have the right to have the companies correct any mistakes. It can be so easy for someone to register you as being in debt and then forget to show you paid it off. Find a mistake in one company and the other two must also correct their credit files. That way, you repair your creditworthiness.

Just as important is credit risk management. This is where you monitor your reports to ensure that no-one else is impersonating you. Identify fraud is a growing problem. If you travel around a lot or have multiple accounts, it can be worth paying a company to verify the transactions. The early you detect any abuse of your credit cards, the sooner you can put defensive measures in place. Say you go away on holiday. A common fraud is for someone to note your card number and then put through big ticket transactions before you get home. If you're using credit check services, all suspicious payments are picked up immediately and your card cancelled instead of leaving everything as an unwelcome surprise for you when you get home.
